Job Description: 

To monitor local implementation of company policies, programs, and initiatives related to H&S systems and sustainable development; including management or performance of the work necessary to ensure adherence to safety regulations, completion of safety training, and attainment of business values and objectives.

The role is responsible for the daily management of the H&S departments including the budget in these areas as well as coordinating, planning and managing the implementation of programs with other departments and stakeholders

Health and Safety Operational Excellence

  • Participate in developing, maintaining and monitoring the implementation of Health and Safety (H&S) policies and underlying procedures
  • Document, review and revise H&S policies, procedures and practices to ensure optimum effectiveness
  • Ensure effective implementation of health and safety programmes and related activities in line with governmental and corporate compliance requirements
  • Manage and deliver required outcomes for specific projects / programmes / plans while reporting progress to senior colleagues
  • Prepare the annual Health and Safety budget
  • Participate in the planning process of Health and Safety resources to cover all operational areas
  • Plan and investigate accidents, injuries or occupational diseases and determine the causes and preventative measures
  • Report and review findings from accident investigations, facilities inspections and audits
  • Provide guidance and offer solutions to safety problems across the Mine operations
  • Manage/own the Risk Register and the MOC programme and follow up on actions to ensure they are completed in a timely manner

Health and Safety Legal and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with Company health and safety Standards including SAFEWORK, applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Assist Engineering and Operations in planning for compliance with regulations in connection with new or modified operations (e.g., new plants or processes, formulation changes, turnarounds) in order to ensure compliance

Health and Safety Monitoring, Compliance and Continuous Improvement

  • Routinely inspect the facilities, machinery, and safety equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance
  • Routinely monitor the workforce for unsafe behaviours and coach employees on the correct behaviours when observed
  • Audit safety management systems that are consistent with company practices and reflective of the company standards and legislation
  • Audit the implementation of the fatal hazard protocol as per requirement
  • Perform surveys, audits, and gap assessments and recommend corrective actions for continuous improvement to ensure safe and healthy working conditions throughout the plant
  • Develop personnel – assess skills, determine needs and develop training programs for areas of responsibility

Leadership and Direction

  • Develop Health & Safety personnel – assess skills, determine needs and develop training programmes for areas of responsibility
  • Provide leadership, coaching, mentoring and work direction and evaluate performance of the Safety Team
  • Provide leadership and updates on safety audits, observations and near misses with follow up on all open action items
  • Direct the overall responsibilities within the Safety Department, which includes daily direction of management personnel, operating budget, and improvements
  • Supervise safety department staff to ensure development, administration, including developing and conducting proficiency assessments

Stakeholder Management, Communication and Capacity Development 

  • Coordinate actively with other departments to improve work conditions according to company standards
  • Create a strong partnership with the other departments to ensure that safety is integrated within all aspects of the business and that H&S staff is providing meaningful assistance to business partners
  • Maintain a close coordination with departments to create strategies for the implementation of projects related to health and safety

Health and Safety Data Management Systems

  • Guide the implementation of the H&S Management System and SAFEWORK
  • Compile, analyse, and interpret accident statistical data; recommend process and product safety features that will reduce employee exposure to chemical, physical, and biological work hazards

Requirements: Qualification and Skill 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Safety, Safety Management, Engineering or related technical field Content
  • Total minimum of 6-10 years’ experience in a Health and Safety environment/industry
  • Including a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a management role
  • Good proficiency in English
  • Cross-Cultural Communication skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent Microsoft Office Suite skills
